Question

Did you grow up with a tv? Am I the only one who hasn't kicked the habit? Sometimes I feel like I am...

More clues, please?

Sorry, I was being very vague, though not on purpose. Lately, I've been feeling like everyone I work with would be horrified to know I still watch TV...it's not that I always want to, but it's a habit hard to break when you grew up with one and still own one. I'm just wondering how other people relate to it -as a neutral substance, as poison, as pleasure, as a bad habit, etc. Does it make a diffference if you grew up with one? Does it make a difference if you tell yourself when you marry you will not have one?

So many questions.

And all about a television. Hmmmm....

Ohhh it's about tv!!!
I grew up with one, still have one and I like to quote my grandaddy as he said that TV stands for Time Vaster- which I think it is!!!!
(I wish we'd chuck it out- but Hubby won't let)

Okee - I knew exactly what you meant. I've heard that feeling so many times from people who are growing. My family has 7 tvs in the house. I don't watch any of them. I don't think it poisons you; it just wastes your time. Hopefully, you're finding enough productive things to keep you busy. But I would never judge somebody who is caught where they are now. Because I have no doubt that you would set home a home differently, and find other alternatives. Of course, if you end up just reading people magazine instead of watching the Apprentice on tv, I wouldn't be impressed. Just keep your ideals in mind, and do your best to work towards them.

I grew up with a TV and I still have one now with hundreds of cable channels. Ask me how much TV I watch? Barely any. There is so many better things to do than watch tv! I must admit though that I still haven't kicked the habit of watching cartoons... I'm really such a kid!

i think it does make a difference if you say you wont watch it when youre married. thats part of the benefits of getting married - youll have less free time, bigger and better things to think about, and the support of your spouse..

kasamba--yes, tv! the quintessetial time vaster, as your grandaddy says!

josh--7? finally, i can admit the truth...we had 8. of course, about half of those died after a few years, probably from overuse. I see what you're saying, and I think you're right, since about 90% of what I watch is clean and fine, just kind of gross to sit in front of a shiny box for hours on end. And I'm way more ashamed of some of the things I've read than the things I've seen....but people magazine instead of the apprentice? Chas v' chalilah!

frumgirl--there are so many things to do instead of watching tv, but since my job ends around 12 pm every day, i have a lot of free time. too much free time. i could do a post on just how truly stinky for your soul free time is. maybe later. because i could also write 1800 posts on how much of a stinky procrastinator i am. i push off everything until it MUST be done, and i sometimes use tv as that thing to push off other stuff with. (note--i'm not actually stinky, i'm just in the kind of mood where it sounds like the perfect adjective to define my bad habits. :)

anonym00kie--(btw-good name!) i agree with you also. see, i'm so easy to get along with. i'm planning on growing the rest of my life, so starting marriage free of something like television seems like a good step. it might be weird for me, or for my future chasan (whomever he may be, wherever he may be), but we'll grow together, support each other, work together...yay! Yep, that's definitely reason number 3 out of my 264 reasons to get married...

hi, my name is AFI, and I had a problem. I was a TOTAL TV addict when I was growing up.
At some point I started losing interest. I'm not exactly sure when or how or why. Probably around the time I spent a year in Israel away from it all. Even now, I barely watch. Until this year I only had one show that I watched "religiously". I can't go without my 24.

So, Okee, I think the answer is you're not alone...

AFI--welcome to tv anonymous...or maybe not! It's not so much that I watch it too much -maybe a show or two a day, but the entire concept that I feel I shoud've "kicked". I never got into 24, for fear of becoming addicted, but I'm already addicted to "lost"...

Masmida--yeah...it would've been smart to insist on no tv where I live. 2 late, maybe next year, when I move...

out of towner--my earliest memory of tv is being at home with chicken pox. I was around 7, I think, and all I remember is feeling so happy that I was able to stay home form school the WHOLE day, and just watch tv. So young and already sucked in. But don't even ask me how many trips I make to blockbusters, its just toooo embarrassing. Netflix would save me loads, but I prefer deluding myself into thinking I don't need it.

josh--You said it!! Now I can snap out of it and go back to my "Yayyyy!!!"s :)

same here, but I don't think we're alone with this problem.
It's just a very entertaining and possibly relaxing medium.
It's true though that rarely does a movie do justice to the original book.

Im a major procrastinator too....

prag--one movie that i liked as much as the book-the count of monte cristo. i think it's cause the movie has a different ending!
